Part 1
If you are confused by all the words used on your beauty products, read our simple guide to the most commonly used. Hopefully it will give you a better insight into what you are buying and using.
Antioxidants – the most well known are the ACE vitamins, that is vitamins A, C and E. which work by neutralizing molecules called free radicals which destroy skin cells and contribute towards premature aging.
Alpha-Hydroxy Acids – AHAs or fruit acids, a natural product found in fruit, sour milk and wine. These slough off dead skin cells to reveal the new and younger looking skin beneath.
Allergy-screened – all the individual ingredients in a product have undergone exacting tests to ensure that they are safe to use and that there is only a minimal risk of causing an allergic reaction.
Aloe Vera – now found in many skin care products. It is the juice from the leaves of a cactus-type plant which is famous for it’s soothing, protecting and moisturising qualities.
Aqua – is plain water which is vital for healthy skin and is usually the number one ingredient on product information.
Benzoyl Peroxide – is commonly found in over the counter spot and acne treatments. It gently peels away surface skin and unclogs the blocked follicles which can cause spots.
Beta-Hydroxy Acids – work in the same way as Alpha-hydroxy acids except they are less irritating to the skin. The most common one is salicylic acid which also fights bacteria on the skin.
Botanicals – found in plants, help with regenerating the skin. Examples of these are aloe vera, gingko and ginseng.
Collagen – is an elastic type substance found in the underlying tissues of the skin that provides skin support and springiness. Collagen fibres become less elastic as we age, so the skin becomes less supple and more saggy.
Coenzyme Q10 – a nutrient which is found in every cell in our bodies. It works well as a wrinkle buster.
Cocoa Butter – comes from the seeds of the cacao tree which is found in tropical climates. It is a great moisturiser and is especially beneficial to dry skins.
Exfoliation – is the removal of the dead surface skin cells. This process will reveal softer, younger looking skin. Always make sure that the exfoliating scrub you choose is specifically for use on the face. The grains in body scrub are too harsh for the face.
