Avoid using nail polish removers that contain acetone as they can strip your nails of essential moisture. Shop around for one that contains conditioners.

Apply hand cream whenever you wash your hands as the oils will seal moisture into your nails.

Wear rubber gloves when doing the washing up. Exposure to water is the biggest cause of soft nails.

To help make weak nails stronger, try painting base coat and polish under the nail tips.

Dry wet nails instantly by plunging them into ice cold water.

To repair a split nail, tear a little paper from a teabag and glue it over the tear with nail glue. When completely dry, buff until smooth and apply your nail polish.

If you are about to do a messy job where you cannot wear gloves, then drag your nails over a bar of soap. The undersides of your nails are full of soap which leaves less room for dirt.

Clean stains such as ink from your finger tips by using toothpaste and a toothbrush.

Never file your nails after a bath as this is the time when they are at their weakest and most likely to split.

Try using a baby cotton bud stick to clean under your nails. It is much kinder than scrubbing with a nail brush.
